I am a skeptic converted.
When I first heard about Delicious, I thought "Why the heck would anyone use that?" but after messing around with it and talking to Amy about how to set it up, I have decided it is actually pretty neat. I went a head and started working toward my goal of getting my reading 8 class linked. The first hurdle was getting the district tech guys to allow me access to the site. Because it is a social networking site, it was blocked by the district filters. They did give in when I explained how I would be using it, but gave me a warning that if they found it used inappropriatly, they would block it again. So now I have a class account started and just need to wait until I can get my classes into the computer lab and introduce it to them.
I also introduced Delicious to my Team Up group. Team Up is a group of 6 OJHS teachers working in partnership with the U of M to improve ELL education at our school. This year we have really be focusing on professional development for the staff. My suggestion was to create a Delcious account filled with online ELL resources. We can bundle them according to content area if we want using tags. No one else in Team Up had even heard of Delicious, (which surprised me, because although I had never used it, I had at least heard of it.) and they all loved the idea. They also loved being able to search other Delcious accounts using tags and seeing what other teachers had bookmarked.
So, I am a Delicious convert. I cannot yet say the same about Twitter.

Hi!
ReplyDeleteI have been working on setting up a delicious account trying to find information on ABE and ELL. I was wondering if we could share information on what we find for ELL. I know some of what I find might not work for your students and vice-versa, but I would think there would be some common ground.
I also have a twitter account which I have not done much with because I don't know many to twitter with. My account name is CathyQ10.
See you Wednesday.
